Prof CHO Nam-Joon’s team was recently awarded the Guangdong Province emergency funding on the prevention and containment technologies of COVID-19 virus infection to support their work in SPR platform development for COVID-19 virus detection.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, Prof Cho and his team has dedicated their research on combating the newly discovered coronavirus. The project aims to deploy the optical biosensor for live detection of COVID-19 virus particles. This feature diagnostic tool has simple design, however, can realize quantification of virus particles in real time with high sensitivity and specificity at low sampling amount. In particular, the new tool can be a general countermeasure to limit the spread of potential viral pathogen.

Professor Cho Nam-Joon is the PI of the project under SSIJRI’s New Materials Platform, he has a broad range of laboratory-clinical research experiences from engineering to clinical medicine of infectious diseases and antiviral therapy. His research is focused on engineering approaches solve challenging medical problems and translating research findings into enhanced therapeutic and drug delivery options that more effectively target infectious diseases.
